Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A is one of the two parts of Original Medicare. This will give you hospital coverage. If you are already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board payments, you are automatically eligible for Medicare Part A when you turn 65. You may be eligible for Medicare Part A before the age of 65 if you have a disability, end-stage renal disease (ESRD), or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

What does Part A cover?

  • Inpatient hospital care
  • Skilled nursing facility care (following a qualifying hospital stay)
  • Hospice care
  • Home health care

What is not covered by Part A?

  • Long-term care (also called custodial care)
  • Most dental care
  • Eye examinations related to the prescription of eyeglasses
  • Dentures
  • Cosmetic surgery
  • Acupuncture
  • Hearing aids and fitting test
